1958 356A 1600S Speedster

Did this final-year Speedster have what it takes to top the market?

Introduced in 1954, the Porsche 356 Speedster was a versatile sports car designed for both daily use, and with minor modifications, weekend racing. The Speedster featured a cut-down windscreen, bucket seats, a minimal folding top, and side curtains instead of roll-up windows. These design elements reduced the car’s weight, enhancing its suitability for competition, and quickly made the 356 Speedster a dominant force in sports car racing.

This 1958 356A 1600S Speedster was purchased by the seller in 1979 and refurbished in the early 2010’s in it’s original shade of Aquamarine Blue over Red leather. After the work was completed, the car won its class as well as the Toast of the Concours Award at the 2016 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance.

Eight years on, the car still presents in near-concours condition as evidenced by hundreds of detailed photos in the gallery. The Aquamarine Blue paint looks excellent as does the Red leather interior and the engine bay and undercarriage are just as clean. Additional images of the refurbishment are present and show matching engine and transaxle numbers.

This beautiful Speedster sold at a final bid of $380,000, which was slightly above average and in-line with other recent numbers-matching, refurbished comps. We have, however, seen a number of Speedsters crest the $400k mark, including the recent sale of another matching numbers Aquamarine Blue example that sold for $500,000 all-in at RM’s Dare to Dream sale earlier this month.

Had this example not had a few of its body panels replaced early on, I think it could have crested $400k, but it would have taken two bidders who just “had to have it” to get anywhere near $500k. Fair deal for a wonderful car.
