1958 356A Speedster

The Speedster market looks back thanks to this gorgeous car

Introduced as a lower-cost, lightly optioned open-top version of Porsche’s 356, the Speedster now sits atop of 356 hierarchy. The Speedster features a cut-down windscreen, bucket seats, and a minimal folding soft top with side curtains instead of roll-up windows. The lack of features also meant a lack of weight, which suited the car for sports car racing across America.

This 1958 356A Speedster was originally imported into the US through Hoffman Motor Cars in New York and spent much of its early life in California before being discovered and removed from storage in 2015.

The car has been refurbished in its original shade of Fjord Green with work completed after it was removed from storage less than a decade ago. The paint appears to still be in good condition and the seller provides many detailed photos along with engine lid and door stamps.

The interior is finished in Tan leatherette fixed-back bucket seats, Beige square-weave carpeting, and a two-spoke steering wheel and shows minimal wear. The matching-numbers engine has been recently serviced and shows the results of a compression test performed in preparation for the sale.

The market for 356 Speedsters remained somewhat steady through 2023 with an average sales price of $339,000 before looking a bit softer at the beginning of 2024 with a sell-through rate of 50% and pricing below 2023’s average. But our Spotlight car, with its matching numbers, rare color, and quality work, bucked that trend as it sold at a final bid of $380,000, making it a top 3 sale for 356A Speedsters over the last 12 months.
