1959 356A Convertible D
An auction regular finally sees a final bid good enough to take her home
The Porsche 356 Convertible D featured several design changes from its predecessor, the Speedster, including a taller windshield, roll-up windows, and more comfortable seats, making the car more practical and comfortable for everyday use which appealed to a broader audience. Produced for just two years, the Convertible D bridged the gap from the Speedster to the 356B Roadster, and set the stage for Porsche’s future direction combining sporty performance with added comfort and refinement.
Finished in Ivory over a Red leather interior, this 1959 356A Convertible D was originally sold by Hoffman Motor Car Company before being purchased by its second owner in 1961. That owner held onto it for quite some time before the current owner purchased the car in August 2020.
The car was repainted at some point by a previous owner and shows some chips and discoloration around the body along with pitting on the chrome bumpers and moldings, tape over the chrome windshield pillars, and some visible rust in the door bottoms. The original engine was treated to an overhaul by the current owner as was the manual transaxle and suspension components. A nice driver by all accounts although it has its few issues a new owner could address if they wished to or even consider a full restoration.
Like many Porsche models, Convertible Ds peaked around 2022 with average prices going from just under $300,000 to just over $200k today. Back in August of 2020, our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $210,000, which was on the lower end of comps at the time. It was offered earlier this year, first failing to sell at a final bid of $205,000 at the beginning of February followed by another no sale at a final bid of $105,000 at the end of February. Six months on, it finally sold at a final bid of $185,000, which seems pretty solid for the recent market. Fair deal, for now.
