1959 356A Coupe

With period race history plus decades of ownership, how could you go wrong with this awesome 356?

I do love a good 356 Race Car, especially one with a bit of province like this 1959 356A Coupe which began its racing career right out of the gate at the Roskilde Ring in Denmark in 1959.

The current owner purchased the car in 1978 and began a four-year refurbishment before taking the car racing yet again where it competed in ~100 FIA Appendix K Class GTS 5 races up until 2010. After its racing career, the car underwent restoration, yet again, from 2015 to 2018. It currently sits finished in its original color of Sonderfarbe Orange and sports Plexiglass windows, Carrera GT trim strips with bumper guards removed, aluminum bumper mounts, splash plates, leather hood straps, a Marchal Fantastic 662 spotlight, an external killswitch, and an auxiliary brake light at the top of the rear window.

On the inside, this example features Recaro 1328 bucket seats in Black leatherette, Tan square weave carpet, a removable four-point roll bar, a removable three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, lightweight door panels with leather window straps, red four-point Sabelt/Sparco safety harnesses, a short shifter with an aluminum gear knob, tan rubber floor mats, and a body-colored dash fascia with analog VDO gauges.

Out back, this 356 is powered by a modified 1600 Super 90 engine with Shasta 83.5mm pistons, re-bored cylinders, a reground and balanced crankshaft, new crank bearings, new valves and guides, and Mirra cut seats. There’s so much more to this car than space permits. What a cool example with some great vintage racing history.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen this car here, though, as I featured it back in May of this year when it failed to sell at a final bid of $62,700. This time around, it brought a final bid of $91,000 and while that’s a significant jump up, it wasn’t enough to take her home. This Carrera GT-style 356 is currently listed in PCARMARKET’s Deal Tank with a Buy Now of $115,000. Given the history, the work that went into this car, and the period correct parts, I’d say that’s a fair deal. The only thing holding this one back still is that it’s located in Sweden at the moment.
