1960 356B Roadster

A nice driver in a rare shade, but was it enought?

Porsche’s Convertible D was a hard act to follow, but they gave it a go with more creature comforts and improved performance with the 356B Roadster starting in 1959. The Roadster featured Speedster-like appointments such as a removable windshield frame, similar dashboard, and a lighter, less bulky soft-top frame. Performance-wise, the Roadster benefited from all of the “B” upgrades with more power and revised suspension.

This 1960 356B Roadster comes to market out of 34 years of ownership, during which time it was repainted Fjord Green over Tan Vinyl and Corduroy during a 2001 refurbishment. The replacement engine was installed prior to current ownership and was increased to 1,720cc in 2008. Other work includes a carb rebuild in 2014, generator overhaul in 2018, fuel pump rebuild in 2022, and more through 2023 and 2024. With the refurbishment starting to show its age and a few items that need replacing, I’d put this one in driver condition, and in that color combo, I’d love to be that “driver.”

The T5 Roadster market has been fairly steady over the last few years averaging just shy of the $200,000 mark since about mid-2022. The two Roadsters we saw sell during Car Week did well with one selling at an about average price of $196,000 all-in and another almost hitting the $300k mark at $291,000 all-in. Our Spotlight car failed to sell at a final bid of $121,000. Even with the aging restoration and few items that need to be addressed, I would expect more from this one. Apparently, so did the seller.
