1962 356B Roadster
This rare Roadster took the "project" out of the project car
Porsche’s 356B Roadster was a worthy continuation of the legendary 356 Speedster and offered more creature comforts like roll-up windows and a folding soft top while still retaining the sportier, open-air experience of the Speedster. Of the Roadster, the final T-6 “Twin-Grille” bodies of 1962 were built by D’Ieteren Frères and featured a flatter hood thanks to the relocation of the gas filler and two grilles out back for improved cooling. With only 249 produced, the Twin-Grille Roadsters are prized by collectors today.
This 1962 356B Roadster is a German-market example that was originally finished in Heron Grey over Red leatherette. It eventually found its way to the US in 1969 via a US service member stationed in Germany and was eventually purchased by the seller in 2003. In 2018, the seller completely disassembled the car in preparation for a full restoration, and got close, before deciding to sell it.
As far as project cars go, I think this is the most complete I’ve seen with the body completely repaired and prepped for paintwork with new sheet metal and no filler used according to the seller. The interior was completely stripped as well with the Red leatherette seats, matching door panels, dashboard, and the rest of the interior ready to be installed. Plus, with the engine rebuilt in 2023, it looks like there isn’t a whole lot more to get this one across the finish line.
Over the last twelve months, despite the rest of the 356 market going one way, T6 Roadsters have actually been going up thanks to a number of recent sales all over $300,000, the highest of which, a beautiful Red example offered by Road Scholars sold at a $400,000 five-year high in December of last year. Our Spotlight “project” car sold at a final bid of $140,000. And if all the work is as complete as stated by the seller, with the body not needing anything other than paint and alignment, I’d say the winning bidder might have a deal on their hands. Well bought, and I hope to some day see how this one turns out.
