1963 356B Super 90 Coupe

A new 5-year record for a prime example

Revealed in September of 1959, Porsche’s 356B featured a new engine option that was the indirect replacement for the Carrera de Luxe models: the Super 90. The Super 90 engine featured a new intake manifold, larger Solex carburetors, 9.0:1 pistons, stronger valve springs, and a new crankshaft with 55mm main bearings for a power output of 90 horsepower and 89 lb-ft of torque.

This 1963 356B Super 90 Coupe comes to us as part of the Gruppe P collection on Bring a Trailer. Finished in its original color combination of Smyrna Green over Tan, this car received a sympathetic restoration in 2010 and has been driven only 450 miles since. Additional equipment includes chrome-finished 15” steel wheels, finned drum brakes, Carello driving lamps, and a Blaupunkt push-button radio.

The car is in remarkable condition inside and out and has been in the care of noted Porsche collector Dr. Bill Jackson and noted restorers Road Scholars of East Durham, NC. It comes with original sales documentation, a copy of the Kardex, service history dating back to the ‘60s, and pictures from the 2010 restoration.

As a truly beautiful example with a wonderful history that many of us would be lucky to own, it is no wonder that this Super 90 set a new 5-year auction record for a T6 Coupe at a final bid of $191,000. I hope to see this one on the Concours field soon, and good luck to those showing against it.
