Porsche’s final iteration of the 356 came in 1963 with the launch of the 356C. With upgraded disc brakes and a Zenith-carburated engine producing 95 hp, like the outgoing 356B Super engine, the C has the most modern feel of any 356 offered.
Today’s Spotlight car, the 1965 356C Coupe pictured above, is a recently restored example from 36 years of ownership. Completed in 2020, the car is finished in its original shade of Dolphin Grey with Blue leatherette interior. With hundreds of detailed pictures, including pictures of the restoration process, one can see that the car presents very well, with no corners cut during the restoration process.
Its original engine was retained and rebuilt in the ‘90s with work completed by HCP Research of Santa Clara, CA. In the photographs, you can see that the engine shows its age as it is not quite as clean as the body and interior of the car, and the seller notes that the car struggles to start after long periods of sitting.
Our Spotlight car sold yesterday on Bring a Trailer for $126,000, in line with recent sales of freshly restored cars but slightly lower than the $130k+ we saw earlier this year and towards the end of 2021. After a strong run over the last few years, it looks like 356s are softening a bit. Either way, I think both parties should be happy with the price paid.
