This 914/6 is one of those sales that defies most logic

I’ve had my finger on the pulse of the 914/6 market for the last 18 months as my father and a good friend have been looking for cars with intent. My father went the 911 route, and my friend recently purchased a very nice 914/6 from a private party, but I still keep my eye on these as I’d like to add one to my collection someday.
Over this time, I’ve looked at quite a few cars. Everything from basket cases needing restoration to cars presented as “restored,” but honestly, still in need of restoration. Very few cars I looked at were true #1 cars that I could have brought from the auction to the Concours lawn, although they were priced as such.
A true #1 quality car should be in the $160k range, with very nice #2's in the $120-150k range. Modified cars, on the other hand, trade a bit less, but of course, there is always an outlier… which brings me to today’s Spotlight car.
This 1970 914/6 has been extensively modified, although it originally left the factory as a 914/6. Its 2.5-liter twin-plug flat-six was built by Jerry Woods Enterprises in 2015 using a 911S crankshaft, Carillo connecting rods, Mahle pistons, late-model chain tensioners, Weber IDA carburetors, a front-mount oil cooler, and a stainless B&B exhaust system.
On the outside, the car has been widened using factory GT metal fender flares and repainted black by Brumos Porsche in 2001. During that time, the interior was retrimmed in Black leather with black carpets, Pepita seat inserts, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. This car's great look is the staggered-width 15” Fuchs wheels with an RSR-style finish and four-wheel disk brakes.
So, how much of an outlier was this 914/6? Well, the highest price paid at auction over the last five years for an original 914/6 was $148,400 at this year’s Bonhams Amelia Island Sale. The highest price paid for a modified 914/6 in the previous five years was $171,000 this time last year. But neither compares to the $220,000 paid for this modified 914/6.
Factory GT fenders, Brumos history (although recent, not vintage), and an engine built by Jerry Woods put this one in rarified air. Just don’t expect the value of your 914 to jump now as well.
