1971 914/6 GT

As good as it gets for a 914: A Factory Mote Carlo Rallye car

Distinguished by its box-like steel fender flares, Porsche’s 914/6 GT was the racing version of its quick and nimble little mid-engine roadster. But it wasn’t just those bulging fenders that set the 914/6 GT apart, the cars featured a lower stance with competition shocks, larger brake calipers and rotors, and wider wheels to fill out those fenders.

914/6s went on to great success at the hands of many of Porsche’s best customer race teams, but it was the Werks cars that impressed with a class win at Le Mans as well as success at the Nurburgring, Targa Florio, and the Rallye Monte Carlo.

Today’s Spotlight car, this 1971 914/6 GT, was one of Porsche’s Werks entries into the 1971 Rallye Monte Carlo where it retired with a broken clutch. The car has been restored into its “as raced” condition in the early 2000s and has enjoyed many public outings recently including the GP Ice Race, and 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

In the hierarchy of 914/6 GTs, you have your cars that had the GT package added after delivery at a Porsche dealership for a customer. These examples tend to fetch low to mid six figures when they come up for sale. Then you have the GT cars that were sold to Porsche’s best customer race teams. These cars, depending on race history, have seen bids in the upper six figure range to just shy of $1m.

So, given the order of things, one would put a factory Werks 914/6 GT with great race history over the $1m mark, and that’s where it landed, with a final bid of $1.1m at Saturday’s sale. A little light in my opinion, and in the seller’s, as it went unsold at that number. But the current asking price of $1.250,000 is more in line with where I thought this car would end up. Let’s hope a deal is put together on this great piece of Porsche racing history.
