1972 911S Coupe

A lot to like about this Oelklappe 911

1972 was a special year for the 911 as the S model received the new 2,341 cc 190 hp engine along with Porsche’s new 915 gearbox, which could be had in either four, or five speed configurations. In the US, all long-hood 911s came with the five-speed unit unless the buyer requested the four-speed version. Also special to just the 1972 cars was an external oil filler located behind the passenger door, which was removed for the ‘73 model year as too many service attendants had mistaken it for the gas filler, according to legend.

This 1972 911S Coupe features the four-speed 915 transmission and is finished in Silver Metallic over Black leather, shows 81,000 miles on the odometer, and was optioned from the factory with Koni Shocks, Loudspeaker & Noise Suppression, and Tinted Glass All Round.

A cosmetic refurbishment was carried out in 2011 with the front fenders replaced due to corrosion and the body painted in its original Silver Metallic paint. The work still shows in excellent condition as can be seen in the many photos in the gallery. The interior was refinished at this time as well, and it too is in very nice condition.

The 2.4-liter engine is the original unit that came with the car and benefits from an overhaul in 2006. A replacement MFI pump was installed in 2016 and a fluid change was performed in preparation for this sale. Overall a very nice example of a rare ‘72 S.

Over the last twelve months, 2.4-liter 911S have averaged just below the $200k mark at $197,000. Our Spotlight car hammered at a final bid of $180,000, on the lower side of recent sales, but not the lowest. IMO, I’m surprised this car didn’t cross the $200k mark as I think it was in above average condition with good documentation. Well bought.
