What a difference three letters can make

While they look nearly identical, the US Carrera 2.7 and RoW Carrera 2.7 couldn’t be further apart. The Euro/RoW spec car was basically a ‘73 RS Touring in a ‘74 impact-bumper body, as it featured the same engine and nearly identical transmission and suspension. These cars have become known as Carrera 2.7 “MFI’s.” On the other hand, the US-spec came with the 2.7-liter 911S engine, producing only ~167 horsepower and reliability problems, especially in hot climates. These are commonly known as Carrera 2.7 “CIS’.”

This 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 is the latter, a CSI example delivered new to Florida and now offered out of California with 41,000 miles on the odometer. The car is finished in Guards Red over high-back bucket seats finished in Black leatherette with Plaid inserts.

The paint is mostly original, with the window trim and door handles refinished in black chrome under previous ownership. The 15” staggered-width Fuchs wheels were also refinished with black-painted centers and silver lips. While the seats are not original to the car, it is being sold with the removed seats in Black Leatherette with Shetland Blue inserts.

The last major engine service appears to be in 1988 when the valve guides, piston rings, chain tensioners, seals, gaskets, and more were replaced. Many other service receipts are included in the sale, along with what appears to be a novel in hand-written notes. Overall, a well-loved car with lots of documentation.

The market for US-spec Carrera 2.7s is quite different than that of its overseas cousins. The five-year average for MFI cars has been just shy of $260,000, with recent highs in the $350-434,000 range within the last year. US CSI cars have averaged just over $100k over the past twelve months, with a high of $218,400 for an example sold at Porsche’s 75th Anniversary sale.

At a hammer price of $155,000, our Spotlight car is the third-highest sale of a CSI example in the last twelve months and is indicative of the condition in which this car is in and the presentation by the seller. Well sold, but also well deserved.
