1974 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI

Even at this price, these are still a bargain

In 1974, Porsche followed up its legendary Carrera RS with the updated range-topping Carrera. Its debut coincided with the launch of the new G-series body for the 911, which included revised bumpers, a shorter hood, and other upgrades. Carrera models featured wider fenders to accommodate larger Fuchs wheels, but their most important distinction was the impressive 210-horsepower 2.7-liter flat six-cylinder from the previous Carrera RS, with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. New smog and fuel-efficiency regulations at the time precluded these 2.7 “MFI” Carreras from being imported to the United States. Not only forbidden fruit in America, the Carrera 2.7 MFI was also a rarity in the rest of the world, with production limited to 1,633 total units.-RM Sotheby’s

The first paragraph from RM’s catalog nails what is so special about the ‘74 RS, which, in my opinion, is still an underappreciated example of the 911. This 1974 911 Carrera RS 2.7 MFI is finished in a stunningly rare shade of Gulf Blue over Midnight Blue leatherette with Dark Blue Shetland Tweed inserts and was the car I wanted to take home last night had I had the funds.

Originally delivered in Italy, this example then spent time in Belgium before making its way to North America in 2021, where it received over $24,000 in work from marque experts Luftech Motorsports. Every inch of this car was perfectly preserved, from the paint to the interior and down to the smallest detail. A truly stunning example.

It sold at a high bid of $320,000, putting it in the rarified air of 2.7 MFIs sold above $300k and just behind last weekend’s sale of $330,000 at The White Collection. While a top-three price over the past five years, I still think these will eventually stretch their legs in the market for years to come, especially for excellent examples like this one. Well bought if you ask me.
