Developed jointly by both Porsche and Volkswagen in the ‘60s, the 914 came to the American market as only a Porsche for both the four-cylinder and six-cylinder versions as Porsche feared that sharing a body with VW would hurt the Porsche brand here in the US. For the 1974 model year, the 914 was available with a 1.8-liter engine as well as an optional 2.0-liter and bumper guards front and back.

Today’s Spotlight car, this 1974 914, is a 2.0-liter example finished in Signal Orange over Brown vinyl and is equipped with the Appearance Group Package, 15” Fuchs alloy wheels, Bilstein rear dampers, fog lights, and a Stoddard muffler. Purchased by the current owner in 1996, the car now shows 72,000 miles and is presented in original condition.
With over 250 photos in the gallery, every inch of this car has been documented. The paint and interior are in very good condition, as are the interior, engine bay, and undercarriage. The car has its original window sticker, keys, tool roll, and books with plenty of Porsche service stamps. Also included with the sale is a trunk full of PCA concours awards earned over the last 27 years.
The market for 2.0-liter 914s is all over the place as they made quite a few, and they come in all conditions these days. The average price paid over the last twelve months is $24,275, with a low of $3,500 and a high of $63,000, until now.
Our Spotlight car sold at a high bid of $64,000, making a new twelve-month high for the model, and it deserved every penny. The buyer summed this up perfectly, “Yes, I paid quite a premium…..but it was exactly what I was looking for. A 73 or 74 2 liter in an interesting color, and most importantly (to me) in original condition. I’ve been looking for a long time for one to fit the bill………and this one did. It checked all the boxes.” When it’s the one, you bid to win.
