1974 914 2.0

Which 914 is best 914?

The 914 was originally developed as a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche, with four-cylinder 914 sales handled through VW dealerships and six-cylinder sales handled through Porsche dealerships. But Porsche thought that having 914s sold by VW in the American market would erode their brand image, so they convinced VW to allow them to sell both versions of the car in North America. And sell they did, with over 118,000 units produced between 1969 and 1976.

During that time period, we saw subtle changes to the body, mostly an evolution of the bumpers. From 1970 to 1972, the 914 was offered with smooth chrome or painted bumpers. In 1973, crash standards necessitated the addition of front bumper guards, and in 1974 these were added to the rear. 1975 and 1976 required heavier, rubber-covered bumpers that, although they didn’t look very attractive, made the car more stable at high speeds.

The engines evolved as well over time, with four-cylinder models originally receiving a 1.7-liter unit that was later replaced in 1974 with a 1.8-liter and the top-of-the-line six-cylinder cars moving to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in 1973.

This 1974 914 is a 2.0-liter example that is finished in Sunflower Yellow over Black vinyl and was fully refurbished prior to being acquired by its current owner in 2021. The paint appears to be in good condition, with some wear present in the photos but overall, a clean car. The interior shows minimal use, and while the odometer shows only 8,000 miles, the true mileage is unknown.

The 2.0l flat-four received a top-end rebuild in 2018 with plenty of servicing since, with new spark plugs and an oil change performed in preparation for the sale. The five-speed transaxle was rebuilt in 2022, with the clutch components and shift rod being replaced since. Overall a very nice car with plenty of service history and photos documenting the refurbishment.

As you can imagine, prices for 4cyl 914s vary greatly, not just by condition but also by year, with 1973 and 1974 usually taking the top spots in the market. And our Spotlight car was no different, selling at a final bid of $36,900. A fair price for a nice car that both parties should be happy with.
