1974 914 LE

It's been two years since an LE sale. Did this Bumblebee buck the trend?

The Porsche 914 LE was a limited-edition model released in 1974 built to commemorate Porsche’s success in the Can-Am racing series. Distinct from regular 914s with its unique “Bumblebee” and “Creamsicle” color schemes, the LE also had performance upgrades such as alloy wheels, anti-roll bars, a front spoiler, and a special interior. Only 500 examples of each colorway were produced, making the LE a rare and sought-after variant in the 914 lineup.

This 1974 914 LE is of the “Bublebee” variety as it is finished in Black with Sunflower Yellow accents and 15” Mahle alloy wheels. The car was acquired by the seller as a disassembled project in 2019 with subsequent work involving a repaint in its original color combination, refresh of the interior, and servicing of the brakes and other suspension components.

In 2022 the car received a replacement Type 4 engine with displacement increased to 2,056cc along with KB Performance pistons, a Raby 9590 camshaft, Hoffman Automotive Machine cylinder heads, a 123ignition distributor, and FJ67 fuel injectors. Pictures of the engine build and refresh are included in the gallery along with receipts for the work completed.

914 LEs have been a tough sell over the last couple of years with two Creamsicles failing to sell in-between this listing and the sale of another Bumblebee at $40,000 in August of 2022. But as we know, that was the peak of the market, and if I were on the selling side, I’d probably be expecting a little less despite the rarity as it’s been quite a while since that last one sold. That being said, our Spotlight car failed to sell at a final bid of $34,000, which I feel was all the money. Maybe a few more thousand dollars can get it done off the block.
