1974 914 Modified

Upgraded to a 2.0-liter engine, but not 2.0-liter prices

1974 marked a pivotal year for Porsche’s mid-engined sports car, offering three engine options: the 1.7-liter flat-four which was phased out mid-year, the new 1.8-liter, and the top-tier 2.0-liter. Compared to earlier cars (1970-73), the ‘74 car introduced impact bumpers with rubber bumperettes, a revised exhaust layout, and optional center console gauges in the “Appearance Group” package. It also benefited from the side-shift transmission linkage, vastly improving gear changes over the earlier, vaguer tail-shift system. All of that made the 914 a nimble and lightweight little sports car and a great entry-point into Porsche ownership.

This 1974 914 came refinished in Dark Sapphire Pearl over a Black vinyl interior with cloth inserts and looked to be in nice condition. The seller presented the car well, photographing known rust spots like the “hell hole” and showing the few places a little surface rust was found. While originally a 1.8-liter car, it had a 2.0-liter from a later ‘76 914 rebuilt and installed in 2021 and pictures of the rebuild were included in the listing. Overall, a well presented, honest car in a very nice color.

After softening over the last few years, four-banger 914s have steadied out with averages sitting just above the $20,000 mark with a twelve month high of $57,500 and lows in the four-digits for a few projects. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $27,000, which is a fair deal considering the color change and 2.0-liter upgrade. Had this originally been a 2.0-liter-equipped car, it might have brought another $10k, but for the same fun, I’d take this swapped car all day long.
