1976 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Sondermodell
Was the third time a charm for this rare 2.7?
The 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Sondermodell stands as a rare and fascinating chapter in 911 history, with only 113 examples built exclusively for the German market. These cars were specially crafted to utilize leftover parts from the iconic 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, including its legendary Type 911/83 mechanically fuel-injected engine. Designated by the unique M504 option code and race car-style 9000 series chassis numbers, the Sondermodell featured lightweight elements such as roll-up windows, thin carpeting, and no rear badge. Combined with performance-focused components like a limited-slip differential, Bilstein suspension, and a specially geared 5-speed manual transmission, this limited series embodies Porsche’s commitment to engineering excellence and purposeful design.
This 1976 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Sondermodell is finished in Copper Brown Metallic over a Black leather interior with Tartan cloth inserts and door cars and showed just 18,241 km (~11k miles) on the odometer. The gallery featured many detailed photos as well as service receipts and the seller was very responsive during the auction. The only other thing I’d want to see would be paint meter readings, but the seller did note that the car had been refinished in the past.
Your typical 2.7 MFI Coupes have seen a bit of a downturn in 2024 with prices falling from just below the $300k mark to a recent sale just over $200k, and this comes after a number of big sales at $350k+ to end 2023. But this isn’t your typical 2.7 MFI, it’s a Sondermodell. So how’s that affect prices? Tough to tell as only one other Sondermodell to have been listed failed to sell at $168,999 three years ago. Add to that the fact that this car was listed two previous time, both times failing to sell as well. Unfortunately, the third time wasn’t the charm as it failed to sell yet again, this time at a final bid of just $130,000. Why no love for the Sondermodells?
