1976 911 Turbo Carrera
A beautifully restored example beats its previous sale
The 930 Turbo, Porsche’s first turbocharged 911, was developed to meet homologation requirements for Group 4 racing, which required 400 units to be produced. Powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six engine with a single KKK turbocharger, it produced an impressive 260 horsepower, delivering exhilarating performance with explosive turbo lag that defined its character. The 930 Turbo turned out to be even more successful than Porsche had hoped, as it surpassed the required 400 units quite easily with over 2,800 units of the original 3.0-liters being built, and cemented the 911 Turbo’s legacy for decades to come.
This 1976 911 Turbo Carrera was one of the ~530 examples built from the US and came finished from the factory in Silver Metallic over a Brown leather interior. The previous owner acquired the car as a rolling chassis and went to work repainting it in its factory paint, but opted to reupholster the interior in a a beautiful Russet leather. A replacement turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six was installed during the refurbishment and received plenty of work after the selling dealer’s acquisition in 2023. Offered as part of Harper Porsche’s Collection, this example shows just 312 miles on the odometer since the original refurbishment and is in excellent condition.
Early 3.0-liter 930 Turbos have been on a run this year going from an average price of $117,000 in January to $192,000 today. Our Spotlight car last sold at Gooding & Co.’s Amelia Island sale in 2023 at a strong $190,400. This time around, it hammered at $224,000. Not a bad return for a little over a year.
