1978 928 5-Speed
This original model year example brought all the money
The 1978 Porsche 928 was a bold leap for the German automaker, designed with high expectations to replace the iconic 911 and redefine the brand’s future. As Porsche’s first production car to feature a front-mounted, water-cooled V8 engine, the 928 combined impressive power with the luxurious touches of a grand tourer, creating a refined yet powerful driving experience that earned it Car of the Year from European Car magazine upon its launch. Although it ultimately never displaced the beloved 911, the 928 cemented its own legacy as a symbol of Porsche’s daring engineering and design ambitions.
This first-year 1978 928 5-Speed has had just three owners since new, with the second owner keeping the car from 1988 until selling it to the current owner in 2024. This 72,000-mile example is finished in Silver Metallic with the iconic 16” Phone-dial wheels over a Black leatherette interior with Pinstripe Velour inserts and door cards. The car looks to be in very good condition for the age and mileage as seen in the photo gallery and has been serviced often, as shown by the slew of receipts. Overall, a very nice example of the original 928.
Early Base Model 928s have been on the softer side recently after peaking at an average price of $35,000 towards the end of 2023. These days, averages have been around the $28k mark with a twelve-month high of $93,300 for a 20,000-mile example back in May of this year. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $42,250. And while not the highest we’ve seen so far this year, it leads the pack for cars over 35,000 miles. A fair deal for quite the original.
