1979 928 5-Speed

Year of The Shark

As the first sports car to be named European Car of the Year in 1978, Porsche’s 928 represented a bold departure from tradition, originally envisioned as the replacement for the iconic 911. Featuring an all-aluminum 4.5L V8 engine, a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution achieved through its transaxle layout, and the innovative Weissach rear axle for enhanced stability, the 928 was built as a luxury grand tourer with sports car performance. Its futuristic design, with integrated polyurethane bumpers and pop-up headlights, set it apart, while the spacious, high-quality interior catered to comfort and refinement. These early models remain my favorites for their slab sides and raw, analog driving characteristics.

This 1979 928 5-Speed came finished in Silver Metallic over a Cork leatherette interior with Pasha cloth upholstery and showed just 47,000 miles on the repaired odometer. The presentation of this 928 was top notch with tons of detailed photographs in the gallery, paint meter readings (showing work on the right rear), and more than 75 pages of service invoices from the last two decades of its life. What an example.

We’ve seen this 928 recently as it failed to sell at a final bid of $68,000 back in November of last year against a $28,000 average and the second highest bid we’ve seen in the last twelve months with the only car bid higher being a 20,000-mile example sold in May. I guess they were right to wait for the new year as it sold this time around for a staggering $100,000, making it the third-highest Base 928 we’ve seen over the last five years. After the sale of the Green car last week, and now this, 2025 appears to be the year of the shark.
