1979 928 5-Speed
A perfect 928 for 9/28

I won’t lie; initially, this was a tough one to wrap my head around. A $100,000 Series 1 928. $100,000! What!?
But when you take a step back and look at it, the early series one cars must be the most beautiful, the purest of the bunch. From 1980 onward, the 928 received front and rear spoilers on the S and S2 cars, and the overall exterior was revised from ‘87 on. As time passed, 928s got bigger, heavier, and more complicated.
Today’s Spotlight car, this 1979 928 5-Speed, has recently been refurbished and comes with extensive documentation on work completed over the last few years to get it in the condition it sits in. The car was refinished in Minerva Blue Metallic, and the interior was reupholstered in Black leather with Pasha-style seat inserts for a fabulous ‘70s look.
Mechanically, the 4.5-liter V8 has been rebuilt, and work includes over-boring the number five cylinder, replacing the bearings, rebuilding the cylinder head, and much more, as outlined in the extensive spreadsheet accompanying the car. The manual transaxle and limited slip differential have been overhauled, as well as the suspension and brake components.
All in all, what we have here is one of the best-looking early 928s in a stunning color combination gone through by a marque expert. It's just a beautiful example of what a ‘70s 928 should be. While this was a far cry from the $30,000 928s we see on our typical auction day, I have a feeling we’ll be looking back at this one and the few others that have achieved such a price and wish we had bid.
