1981 924 Carrera GT
So how did our second homologation special in two days fare?
Built to satisfy homologation requirements for FIA Group 4 Racing, Porsche’s 924 Carrera GT featured a turbocharged inline-four with 5-speed manual transmission, flared fenders, 16″ Fuchs wheels, larger brakes, a lowered suspension, a rear spoiler, and a hood scoop for what is, in my opinion, one of the best-looking transaxles ever built by the manufacturer. Add to that the fact that just over 400 were produced, and one can see why these command a premium over most other transaxle Porsches.
This 1981 924 Carrera GT is finished in Guards Red over a Black Velour interior with Red piping and striped inserts. Delivered new to Germany, this 51,000km (~32k miles) example was imported by the selling dealer in 2023 and is offered with German service records, import documents, and original owners manual.
The Guards Red paint appears to be in good condition and the seller includes paint meter readings, which show fairly evenly around the car aside from the hood and upper section of the front bumper which appear to be painted. The interior is in excellent condition, which says a lot, as the velour seats typically show wear, even on lower mileage cars. Prior to importation, the car received a headgasket replacement which is documented in the photo gallery and includes a ton of other service records. Aside from the minor paintwork, a very nice example of a rare 924.
Speaking of rare, over the last three years, this is only the third 924 Carrera GT offered at auction here in the US. The first was a 45,000-mile example that failed to sell at a final bid of $119,937. And the second, a 35,000-mile example with an interesting paint job that got the job done at a $140,000 all-in. Our spotlight car, with less mileage than the previous two, failed to sell at a final bid of $81,500, a far cry from comps. I would have kept her as well. Might do better at a catalog sale with a room full of bidders who appreciate one of Porsche’s best.
