1981 924 Carrera GTS
Was this 924 too rare for its own good?
The Porsche 924 Carrera GTS is one of the rarest and most sought-after models in the 924 lineage, with only 59 units produced in 1981. This lightweight homologation “evolution” special, inspired by the 924 Carrera GTP race car, featured a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing up to 245 horsepower in standard form and 275 horsepower in the track-focused Clubsport variant. With its aggressive wide fenders, Plexiglass windows, and aluminum body panels, the GTS weighed just 2,150 lbs, delivering exceptional performance. Built for enthusiasts, it combined racing DNA with exclusivity, making it a standout in Porsche's history.
This 1981 924 Carrera GTS comes out of 40 years of family ownership and shows just 9,000 km (~5k miles) on the odometer. Originally a German-market example, the car was purchased by the current owner’s father in 1984 and has resided in Southern California ever since. Prior to coming stateside, this GTS received an upgraded Clubsport engine from Porsche which included a bump in displacement and a larger intercooler. The car looks to be in very nice condition with the Guards Red paint showing a bit of aging and the Black cloth interior looking very well kept. Accompanying the car is an assortment of spare parts along with early records, owner’s manuals, a tool roll, a spare set of wheels with Proxes racing tires, a set of Schroth safety harnesses, a tow loop, and a car cover. An unbelievable example of a very rare transaxle unicorn.
With only 59 units produced, comps for our Spotlight car are few and far between. The last sale I have on record was $252,000* all-in for a 37k-mile Clubsport sold by Broad Arrow at their Monterey sale back in 2023. Prior to that, it’s pretty much all Clubsports as well with only one non-CS example selling way back in 2020 for $234,500. Even though this is not an original Club Sport, its engine was upgraded to Clubsport specs by Porsche in-period. And with such low mileage, I expected it to top our last sale. But, our 924 Carrera GTS failed to sell at a final bid of $132,000. Way off the mark.
