1983 911 Turbo

Why was this Grey Market example was quite the deal?

Due to emissions regulations, Porsche’s 930 Turbo was absent from the US market from 1980 until 1986, when it received its new Bosch LE-Jetronic fuel-injected engine. But that didn’t keep cars from seeing US shores as a “Grey Market” emerged to bring the best of Europe here to the US.

This 1983 911 Turbo is one such example, having been imported into the US in May of 1984, and it’s been here ever since. Finished in Black over a Black leather interior, our Spotlight car has 76,000 miles on the odometer and is optioned with a Limited-slip Differential, Sport Seats, A/C, and a Sunroof.

On the outside, the Black paint was refinished in 2008 and looks to be in good condition, although a dent on the right door is noted. The leather interior has held up well, with side bolsters showing slight wear and your usual seat creasing. The headliner shows some creasing and has what looks like two small holes near the sunroof.

Mechanically, the car looks to have been maintained well, as it comes with a pile of receipts. Recent highlights include a valve adjustment in 2013, a replacement of the starter motor in 2018, a replacement battery in 2019, and an oil change in 2023.

Save for one 1979 example, the market for 930 Turbos in the 60-80,000-mile range has been above $100,000. While this example wasn’t the cleanest, it was still a nicely kept car that I would put on the better side of driver condition. That’s why I was surprised to see bids cross the $100k mark, hammering down for $96,000. Someone got a decent deal on a mid-eighties 930 yesterday. I kind of wish it was me.
