1985 944 5-Speed

Low miles and a rare color combo on this 944

To follow up on their front-engined collaboration with VW, Porsche refined the concept and developed the all-Porsche 944. Featuring a design reminiscent of the 924 Carrera GT with its wider stance and a naturally aspirated engine delivering 143 horsepower in its base model, the 944 offered a winning combination of performance and style. This formula propelled it to become Porsche's best-selling model of its era.

This 1985 944 5-Speed is finished in Kalahari Beige Metallic over a Brown leatherette interior with pinstripe velour inserts and shows a low 16,700 miles on the odometer. It came from the factory fitted with a limited slip differential, front and rear stabilizers, a sport steering wheel, and more for an original MSRP of $26,073. Overall, the car looks to be in very nice condition with a minor scratch on the front bumper and some mechanical issues such as a vapor leak from the top of the fuel tank noted in recent service records. Speaking of records, the car is extremely well documented with a binder full of information and hundreds of detailed photos in the gallery.

The thing with 944s is, they made a ton of them, and we see quite a few at auction. This year, prices have held fairly steady at around $14,800 with 68 cars sold and mileage ranging from a low of just 44 to well over 150,000 miles. While 44 miles is extremely low, we do have a number of cars that have sold with sub-20k on the clock with bids ranging from $22,250 to $34,000, excluding the $105k paid for the delivery mileage car.

Our Spotlight car achieved that low bid of $22,250 when it failed to sell last month, but hammered sold this time around at a final bid of $23,944. Given some of the service that the car needed, I’d have to say that it was a fair deal. But those issues are easy enough to have fixed, after that, the buyer has one in a great color combination.
