1986 911 Carrera Coupe
With only 22,000 miles, this 911 Carrera 3.2 was a gem. But did it sell for "gem" money?
The 911 Carrera 3.2 was never supposed to happen, as Porsche had planned to replace the 911SC with their front-engined 928. However, due to a lack of interest in the V8 928, Porsche’s new CEO, Peter Schutz, decided to keep the 911 alive. Thank you, Peter.
Introduced for the 1984 model year, Porsche’s new 911 featured a new 3.2-liter engine and slight visual cues to differentiate it from the outgoing SC, such as integrated front fog lights. On the inside, the 3.2 received the center console and heater controls for the 930 Turbo and included standard high-back leather seats and electric windows. Significant changes were introduced for the 1987 model. These included increased horsepower and a new Getrag G50 manual transmission.
Today’s Spotlight car, this 1986 911 Carrera Coupe, is finished in Guards Red over a Black leather interior and has only 21,664 miles on the odometer. Options include a leather interior, shortened shifter, 16” Fuchs alloy wheels, sport shocks, and an electric sunroof.
It is presented impeccably, with photos showing every inch of the car inside and out. The paint is in excellent condition, and paint meter readings are even, aside from a minor repair on the quarter panel that is evident with the paint meter and a small amount of overspray under the car. The interior is excellent, as is the engine bay and undercarriage. The mileage matches the CarFax and service history, and it comes with its original window sticker, tool kit, tire inflation kit, books, and keys. Truly a wonderfully preserved example.
The thing with Carrera 3.2s is they made a lot of them. But there aren’t many with this kind of miles running around out there. 1987 and up, G50 cars tend to sell for a little bit more, but it wasn’t too long ago that you could find a non-G50 car with over 40,000 miles selling for over $100k. Our Spotlight car, with its 915 transmission and 21k miles, sold at a final bid of $90,000. A fair deal for the mileage and condition. Well bought.
