1986 944 Challenge
A great entry into the world of factory-built race cars
The 944 Challenge was a one-make series organized in the 1980s, featuring identical 944s, emphasizing driver skill over technical advantages, as the cars were mechanically identical with minor variations allowed for set up. Variants of the 944 Challenge took place in different regions, including North America, Europe, and Australia, establishing the 944’s reputation as a capable and reliable sports car.
This 1986 944 Challenge is one of 31 cars produced for the Canadian Rothmans series and competed in the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Post-Challenge career, the car spent time competing in club-level events before being imported to Germany and then back to the US in 2022. The condition of the exterior of the car is in line with what you’d expect for a club-racer and the seller notes paintwork, which honestly, is to be expected.
On the inside, the stripped-out interior features Cobra racing seats along with a roll cage and MOMO steering wheel. The car looks to be well maintained with a number of service records in the gallery with recent work including cleaning the fuel injectors, flushing the coolant, changing the oil and transmission fluids, and replacing the timing belt, pulleys, tensioner, spark plugs, and distributor cap. Also included in the gallery are period photos of this car in action back in the ‘80s.
With Turbo Cups now in the ~six-figure range, the regular 944 Challenge car looks to be the next best thing and a great intro to a factory-prepped race car as our car sold at a final bid of $21,250. And while I don’t have any comps for a Challenge car, I feel that this represents a great deal, especially with where Turbo Cups sit today. Well bought.
