1987 911 Coupe Backdate
Modified madness brings the money
I do love a good backdate, and this 1987 911 Coupe is a great example. Finished in Stone Grey, this Carrera has been modified with a ‘72-style front bumper and ‘73-style rear, 930-spec fender flares, and a 964-spec engine cover and spoiler. Quite the hodgepodge of generations, but as you can see above, it works well and is in very nice condition inside and out.
On the inside, the Recaro seats are trimmed in Black leather with Plaid inserts and the carpets and door panels have been replaced with RS America units. A MOMO Prototipo steering along with Rennline pedals and a metal shift knob complete the interior treatment.
Out back the flat-six was enlarged to 3.4-liters and features Mahle pistons, Carillo connecting rods, ARP hardware, Web Cams 296° camshafts, rebuilt rockers, upgraded valve springs, titanium retainers, twin-spark heads, and much more. All of that newfound power is put to the ground through an Elephant Racing coilover suspension and 17” Braid Fuhs-style wheels.
We all know that you never get back what you put into a build, so in essence, most Backdates are “well bought” if you’re considering the purchase price vs. the cost to complete the build. But the market for modified Carrera 3.2s is defined by the quality of the build and the displacement (and power) of the engine.
Your standard modified Carrera has averaged around $100,000 over the last twelve months with a high of $230,000 for an RSR-style 3.8-liter build in August of last year. Since then, we’ve seen a few 3.4-liter builds up near the $165k mark and an extremely well-done 3.2-liter build sell for $178,000. So the fact that this 3.4-liter build sold at a final bid of $181,111 is quite impressive, and good enough for a solid second place over the previously mentioned 3.8. Well sold.
