1987 924 S 5-Speed

Super-low miles, but not without its issues

With VW killing the 2.0-liter engine blocks for the original 924, Porsche transformed the model into the 924 S by equipping it with a slightly detuned version of the 944’s 2.5-liter, producing 150 bhp. This engine, combined with other upgrades from the 944 like the brakes, improved suspension, and five-lug wheels, significantly enhanced performance while maintaining the lightweight, aerodynamic body of the original 924. By 1988, power increased to 160 bhp, making it faster than the base 944 due to its lighter weight and superior aero, all while maintaining its entry-level price.

This 1987 924 S 5-Speed showed just 27,000 miles on the odometer and came finished in Guards Red over Black leatherette with Porsche-script inserts and my favorite, 15” Phone-dial wheels. The car appears to be in pretty good condition but is showing its age with typical issues such as cracks in the dash and delimitation of the rear glass along with some other blemishes shown in the gallery. Also shown in the gallery were a decent amount of pictures with paint meter readings showing a little high on the hood, but otherwise even, and plenty of service history. A nice, low-milage, honest car.

924 S prices have softened quite a bit over the last few years going from an average price of around $20,000 at the beginning of 2023 to just over $10,000 today. That big price dip is probably more likely due to quite a few high mileage cars in need of work than an overall market melt-down. But still, the market is softer, as our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $12,500. Condition definitely played a part as it wasn’t a collector-quality example. But a nice, inexpensive ride for someone. Fair deal.
