1987 928 S4
A strong sale that still could get stronger
The Porsche 928 S4, introduced in 1987, marked a significant evolution over the 928 S, offering substantial improvements in power, performance, and design. Its 5.0-liter V8 engine produced 316 horsepower, a jump from the 928 S’s 288 hp, resulting in faster acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds and a higher top speed of 165 mph. Transmission options were refined, with improved 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic choices, while upgraded suspension tuning enhanced ride quality and handling. The S4 also featured a more aerodynamic design, contributing to its improved performance over its predecessor.
This 1987 928 S4 is finished in Paint to Sample Maraschino Red Metallic over a Leather to Sample Linen & Wine Red interior and shows 125,000 miles on the odometer. Even with the miles, the paint on the car looks great, but that has a lot to do with the front bumper, hood, and fenders being painted in 2023. On the inside, the Linen leather is in good condition with the steering wheel, gear selector knob, and rear side panels all being reupholstered under current ownership. The car has also been maintained well with a laundry list of components being replaced this year. A well-cared-for example in a stunning color combination here.
The overall market for 928 S4’s has been softening over the last two years going from an average of almost $30,000 to an average of $25,000 today. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $41,000, which is a very strong result and up there with comps with much less mileage. I’d say well sold, but commenters have already offered the winning bidder more as they missed the auction close. Based on that, I’ll change my tune to well bought.
