A non-white Targa sells near the top

As the last hurrah for the G-series 911, Porsche’s Carrera 3.2 was built to accommodate changing emissions regulations in the US and Japan, which resulted in a 210 hp engine for us versus a 231 hp version for Europe. By 1987 that output had increased to 217 hp, and the old 915 gearbox was replaced by the new Getrag G50 unit. The car continued to evolve for the 1988 model year with new Fuchs wheels as standard, along with larger anti-roll bars. For the final iteration in 1989, both the wheels and anti-roll bars got larger, and a CD player (!) was added to the options list.

Today’s Spotlight car, the 1988 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa pictured above, is finished in Gemini Blue Metallic with a Saddle leather interior with a black dashboard and rear speaker shelf, but originally was a Venetian Blue Metallic example over a Silver Grey/Maritime Blue special leather interior car. Still, a beautiful color combination. Work on the car was completed in 2018, and it still looks great, as it has only been driven about 2,000 miles since completion.

The car is well optioned with a Limited Slip Differential, Short Shifter, Sport Seats, Fuchs, Sport Shock Absorbers, and more and comes with its original owners manual, toolkit, spare tire, air pump, and plenty of service records over its 99,000-mile life.

Porsche built plenty of Carrera 3.2s, so there is always a lot to choose from at auction at any given time. Like most 911s, the market has been on a steady incline since early 2020, when average prices hovered around $35k to about $65,000 this summer. Since then, the market has lost a little steam, with our three-month average sitting at just over $60,000.

Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $102,000, putting it up there with some of the best examples offered over the last year. While on the higher mileage side, options, recent refurbishment, and color combination pushed this one up there. Fair deal on a very nice car for all involved.
