1988 911 Carrera Targa M491

So how did mods affect this rare Turbo-look Targa?

The 911 Carrera 3.2 was the first 911 to offer the look of a 911 Turbo on a non-Turbo car with the addition of the M491 option. This option fitted cars with the 930 Turbo’s wide fenders and Whaletail rear wing along with an upgraded suspension, larger wheels, and Turbo brakes. Of the 3,572 units equipped with the wider body, only 559 were Targas, making this 1988 911 Carrera Targa M491 a rare one.

Finished in Diamond Blue Metallic over Marine Blue leather, this US-spec Targa looked to be in good condition inside and out with some wear in the way of chips and a repainted right-rear quarter panel. This 130,000-mile example was extensively modified, though, with a redone suspension and a rebuilt 3.2-liter with increased displacement to 3.5-liters and a parts list that included Mahle pistons and rings, RSR valves, springs, and guides, GT3 Cup/RSR crankshaft, and more. With all of that work on such a rare car, how was the price affected?

For the better part of the last twelve months, M491 Targas have hovered around the $100,000 mark, but we’ve recently seen a new high of $324,000 for a beautiful 7,800-mile example followed by another strong sale of $170,000 for a 53,000-mile example finished in triple Black. Other high mileage examples have sold around our average mark, but our Spotlight car, with its 130k and modifications, sold at a final bid of $120,001. Looks like the mods, along with excellent color combination, helped this one out. Well sold.
