1988 911 Turbo Targa
How did this rare as hen's teeth Turbo Targa fare in today's market?

With the reintroduction of the 911 Turbo to the US market in 1986, Porsche offered a new fuel-injected engine, wider wheels, and a slightly redesigned front end. But the significant changes came the following year when Porsche offered a Cabriolet and Targa version of their Turbo-powered halo car.
This 1988 911 Turbo is a rare Targa version. How rare? With only 141 units produced for the US in ‘88, it’s even rarer than the popular M505 Slant Nose 930s. With 49,000 miles, our Spotlight car is finished in Black over Black leather, and 16” Fuchs allow wheels with Black painted centers. The paint looks decent, with minor blemishes in the photos and higher paint meter readings on the rear quarters. Inside, the leather seats show a bit of patina, but overall, the interior is in good condition.
The engine has a huge Fabspeed intercooler, a BorgWarner K27 turbocharger, and a Fabspeed Maxflo muffler. The car was recently serviced in February of this year and looks to have completed major work in 2019. According to the original window sticker accompanying the car, it features an optional limited-slip differential and has had a new clutch installed during its 2019 service.
Over the last five years, only five examples have been offered at auction here in the US, with the lowest price paid being $158,000 for a 99,000-mile example selling in November 2021 and the rest of the field over $200k. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $215,000, about $5k higher than recent comps with similar mileage.
Even at that price, I’d say this one was well bought as Turbo Targas don’t come around often due to rarity. Even the winning bidder said he’d been looking for a car for 20 years. Which makes me think, isn’t it time Porsche released a new Turbo Targa?
