1988 944 Turbo Cup

A race car for the road. Literally.

As a way to get back to their GT-car racing roots, Porsche developed the one-make 944 Turbo Cup series in 1986 as a way for customers and professionals to go racing around the world. These cars, ordered from the factory with option code M754, came equipped with everything needed to hit the track running including larger KKK Turbocharger, limited slip differential, a transmission with close ratio 5th gear, Bilstein suspension, and an interior featuring a Matter roll cage, Recaro racing seats, and safety equipment for the regulations of the era.

This 1988 944 Turbo Cup is one of 38 Canadian market examples and saw use during the 1988, 1989, and 1990 Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup Championships racking up 10 top 10 finishes during that time. Recently restored to its original Guards Red Rothmans livery, the example presented extremely well with service documentation from 2008 onwards, CASC and PCA logbooks, and a 2023 HSR annual technical inspection.

The exterior of the car is in very nice condition as evidenced by over 100 photos in the gallery as is the interior. Way nicer than most race cars we see cross the online block. But most importantly, the car has been extensively maintained with extensive mechanical work completed in the last 24 months to keep this car in top racing condition.

Currently titled and registered for street use, this car is ready to be entered into HSR group 3 spring races, HSR endurance events, or any other vintage series you set your sights on. An excellent example with only 31,800 miles.

The market for 944 Turbo Cups has seen tremendous growth over the last decade with prices recently increasing from the $50-100k range just a few years ago to well over $100,000 today. Recently we’ve seen $196,000 for a similar 10,00-mile Canadian Turbo Cup example at Porsche’s 75th Anniversary sale and $162,400 for a US-series car with 20k-miles.

Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $130,362, this was a great result for a well-deserving car. Still, I feel that the new owner got a heck of a deal as this particular car is in ready-to-race condition having benefited from extensive care over the last few years. I’m kicking myself for not buying one of these when they were sub-$50k, and I’m sure in five years time we’ll be looking back on this sale saying the same thing about $130k. Congrats to the new owner.
