1988 944S

A new twelve-month high for Porsche's "Super" 944

Porsche introduced the 944S for the 1987 model year, updating the standard model with a high-performance version of its M44/40 engine with dual-overhead cams with four-valves-per-cylinder a-la 928 for 190 horsepower. The suspension was also upgraded using progressive springs similar to the Turbo model and larger front and rear anti-roll bars. Subtle yet potent changes made the S a much more enjoyable choice than the regular 944.

Finished in Stone Grey Metallic over a Light Grey Pearl partial leather interior, this 1988 944S comes to market after being purchased from its original owner in 2022. The paint is in good condition for the age, showing some small blemishes, but nothing more than you would expect for a 71,000-mile example.

The interior is super clean, especially for a lighter color, with seats showing minimal wear, especially in the side bolster area, and the carpets look nice as well. Mechanically, the car is all there with over $5,000 in recent service to bring this example up to snuff for sale. Overall, a very nice example of the “Super” 944.

The market for 944S’ jumped after 2020, with average prices going from just shy of $10,000 to around $16,000 today. But our Spotlight car, being an above-average example IMO, achieved a much deserving above-average sales price of $28,000, setting a new twelve-month record for the model and achieving the second highest sale we’ve seen in the last five years. Well sold, but the buyer got one of the best examples we’ve seen here in a while.
