1989 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe 5-Speed
A final year G50 brings all the money
In 1987, Porsche introduced the G50 transmission to the Carrera 3.2, replacing the older 915 gearbox and marking a significant step forward in refinement and usability. The G50 featured a hydraulic clutch for smoother operation, Borg-Warner synchronizers for improved shift precision, and a more robust design to handle the Carrera’s 3.2-liter engine. These changes resulted in a smoother, more modern driving experience, addressing criticisms of the 915’s notchy and effort-intensive shifts. While the 915 retains its charm among purists, the G50 set a new standard, making the 1987-1989 Carraras particularly desirable in the classic Porsche Market.
This final-year 1989 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe 5-Speed was finished in Grand Prix White over a Cashmere Beige leather interior and showed just 21,000 miles on the odometer. The car appeared to be in very good condition as evidenced by plenty of detailed photos in the gallery that included even paint meter readings all around. Mechanically, the car was well-serviced although the latest receipt that I could see was from 2019. There is a big file included with the car, so maybe more recent receipts are in there.
G50 Coupes consistently sell at a higher average than 915-equipped 3.2s, with final-year 89s having the highest average price of just under $100k over the last twelve months. Average prices overall have appeared to dip over the last two months, but a 21,000-mile example doesn’t come along every day. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $136,500, and while not a top-five sale, it was right there with other low-mileage examples. Fair deal for a great example.
