1989 911 Speedster M491

Sometimes, rare isn't always the answer

When it comes to ‘89 Speedsters, there is a pecking order based on rarity. The most common of the bunch are the Turbo-look widebody Speedsters of which roughly 1,900 were produced. Then there are the super-rare narrow body speedsters with just 171 built. But if you want the rarest of them all, you’ll have to find one of the 69 Speedsters optioned with the M491 “Turbo-look” package, consisting of front and rear spoilers and only built for the Swiss, New Zealand, and Australian markets.

This 1989 911 Speedster is one of the Swiss-market cars optioned with the M491 “Turbo-look” package. It came finished in Grand Prix White over a Black leather interior and showed 67,000 km (~41k mi) on the odometer. The car looked to be in good condition with paint meter readings present in the gallery (showing some paint on the hood), along with stamps in the service book and service receipts. A solid, well-kept example of a rare Speedster.

Comps? I’ve got nothing, other than the last time this Turbo Look Speedster sold, which was not too long ago when it sold for $190,400* all-in at Broad Arrow’s Chattanooga sale. Six months on, it looks like that’s about all bidders are willing to pay, as it failed to sell at a high bid of $185,000, which with buyer’s fee, would put it at $190k. To be honest, that seems cheap for such a rare car. But I think that the fact that not too many know about these cars and the majority probably think the Speedster looks better without the Turbo wing are keeping these at bay.
