1989 911 Targa M491

A whale of a price for this low-mileage Turbo-Look Targa

1984 was the year of the widebody as this was the birth of the M491 “Turbo-look” option for the 911. This was the first time a non-Turbo 911 was available with the wide fenders and rear whaletail of a 930 Turbo along with upgraded suspension, bigger wheels, and larger Turbo brakes. While the M491 option was available in Coupe, Cabriolet, and Targa body styles, it’s the Targas that are the rarest of the bunch with only ~102 produced.

This 1989 911 Carrera Targa is one such M491-equipped cars. It is finished in Guards Red over a Cashmere Beige leather interior and shows 20,000 miles on a repaired odometer. While it is listed as True Mileage Unknown (TMU) and shows the inconsistency on the CarFax, the car has an “odometer repaired” at 16k sticker in the door jamb and from the looks of the documentation, should be around 36k. The car looks every bit as one should for that mileage with the seller providing paint meter readings in the comments and hundreds of detailed photos in the gallery. A beautiful example of a rare Targa for sure.

The market for M491 Carrera 3.2 Targas has been fairly flat over the last two years with prices hovering around the $100,000 mark. We had a handful of sales in the $130-160k range back at the end of 2022, early 2023, and hadn’t seen anything similar until a recent sale at $170,000 and a new five-year high at $324,000. Our Spotlight kept the run going as it sold at a high bid of $145,911. A great result for a very nice car, mileage didn’t seem to be an issue for most bidders.
