1989 RUF CTR

The GOAT of GOATs

“What made this car so special?” The RUF CTR, better known as the Yellowbird, earned its legendary status through a series of defining moments. In 1987, it shocked the automotive world by winning Road & Track’s “World’s Fastest Car” competition, reaching a blistering 211 mph and outperforming Ferrari, Lamborghini, and AMG. Then, in 1989, it became the star of Faszination auf dem Nürburgring, a now-iconic film featuring test driver Stefan Roser fearlessly drifting it around the Nordschleife, showcasing its incredible balance and power. Finally, for an entire generation, the CTR became a dream car when it was immortalized in the original Gran Turismo video game, giving players the chance to experience its raw speed firsthand. These moments cemented the Yellowbird as one of the most legendary tuner cars ever built.

This 1989 RUF CTR, chassis 026, is an extraordinary example of the iconic Yellowbird, one of just 29 ever built and among only nine originally finished in the definitive Blutengelb (Blossom Yellow). Specified in the ultra-desirable Leichtbau (lightweight) configuration, it features the rare optional RUF six-speed gearbox. Preserved in true time capsule condition, this CTR has had just two owners and remains remarkably original, showing fewer than 1,700 km from new.

With no comps and an estimate of “in excess of $6m,” where this one would land was anybody’s guess. But, the estimate appeared to be bang on as it sold “just” in excess of $6m at $6,055,000 with buyer’s premium, setting all sorts of new records along the way. What a result, and what a car. Was definitely something special to see.
