1992 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet 5-Speed Modified
A backdated Cabriolet? When it looks like this, absolutely!
When you think “backdated 911,” you usually picture a long-hood, wide fenders, RSR or RS treatment, a custom interior, and a big, juicy engine out back. But what usually doesn’t cross your mind is Cabriolet, as Porsche didn’t introduce a 911 Cabriolet until 1983, and people don’t usually backdate their 964s to look like 911SCs.
But this 1992 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet 5-Speed has been backdated, and it was done really, really well, checking all of the “backdate” boxes. The exterior features a long-hood along with fender flares and RSR bumpers and is finished in Rubystone Red. On the inside, the interior is completely custom with an exposed Rubystone Red tub and Black Alcantara with Rubystone basketweave adorning the seats and door cards. Other interior tidbits include RSR-style bucket seats, a short shifter with custom wooden shift knob, retro-style gauges, and a whole lot more.
Mechanically, the M64 engine has been bored to 3.8-liters and features plenty of performance goodies such as new pistons and cylinders, rebuilt and machined heads, new Raceware head studs and rod bolts, a performance computer chip, billet aluminum timing chain and cam housing covers, RS engine mounts, an RS single-belt system, and new headers with a high-performance stainless-steel exhaust. And all of that is just scratching the surface on this build.
When it comes to backdates, 3.8-liter builds typically see anywhere from $200,000 to over $300,000 depending on the depth of the build. And based on the list of parts and time that went into this one, I expected to see it near the top, even if it was a Pink Cabriolet. It failed to sell, though, at a final bid of $175,000 but currently has a Buy Now of $250,000 in PCARMARKET’s Deal Tank. I think that’s more like it.
