1992 911 Carrera Cup USA
A US-only spec, outside the US

In the early ‘90s, Porsche Cars North America thought it a great idea to try to emulate the success of the European Carrera Cup series by producing a similar racing series here in the US. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t prove as easy as shipping Carrera Cup cars here to the states thanks to a little “mishap” with Porsche 959s in the ‘80s that caused any racing car that looked like a street car to have to meet EPA and DOT laws.
So PCNA worked with Porsche AG and PMNA to produce a limited run of converted road legal cars into race cars, with 45 eventually being imported. Eventually, pricing for these cars grew out of control, and with a less than stellar US economy, finding teams to foot the bill became impossible. With that, Porsche quietly cancelled the series, converted the few cars that had been built by Andial into race cars back to street specs, and sold them through the dealer network as 911 “Carrera Cup Editions,” birthing a legend.
This 1992 911 Carrera Coupe is one such Carrera Cup Edition, and was turned into the race car it was always meant to be. Finished in Grand Prix White, this example showed 58,000 miles on the odometer and featured a roll cage, Recaro bucket seats, an aftermarket exhaust, and more. The car presented nicely and came with a number of service records, and was said to not have been tracked since importation into France after participation in the 2023 12 Hours of Sebring Classic.
And that “importation into France” is probably what kept this Carrera Cup USA from selling as it settled at a final bid of only €155,000 ($169,188). Yes, we know that the 25% tariff does not apply to cars over 25 years old, but perhaps a lot of uncertainty around the situation kept US bidders out of the fray. A shame, as this is easily a $200k+ car. Hope to see it again.
