1992 911 Turbo S Leichtbau

A light price for a lightweight

The Porsche 964 Turbo S Leichtbau (German for “light build”) is one of the rarest and most hardcore 911s ever produced. Built as a tribute to the 1992 IMSA-winning 964 Turbo Cup car, just 86 examples left the factory, each weighing roughly 400 pounds less than a standard 964 Turbo. Porsche achieved this dramatic weight reduction by seam-welding the bodyshell, stripping the interior to Carrera RS spec, and removing sound insulation and creature comforts. Power came from a special ~380-horsepower Type M30/69 SL engine—an uprated version of the standard Turbo’s 316 hp flat-six—paired with stiffer suspension, beefier brakes, and massive three-piece Speedline wheels. Visually, the Leichtbau stood out with its wide arches with air inlets, unique rear spoiler, and aggressive stance for a menacing looking street car.

This 1992 911 Turbo S Leichtbau came finished in Speed Yellow over a Black leather interior with Grey and Yellow inserts on the fixed-back Recaro bucket seats. Located in Monaco, this 964 Turbo S showed 77,152 km (~48k mi) and looked to be in nice condition although a partial respray on the passenger door and fender was noted in the listing. The car looked to be well-serviced though, with stamps in the manual and a pile of records included in the gallery.

As you can imagine, comps for Leichtbaus are few and far between. The last two sales I have are for a 130-mile example that sold for €770,000 ($994,879*) all-in at RM’s London sale in 2024, and the “sale” of the same car three months prior for $923,500* in Monterey, which I assume fell through. Prior to that, comps were around the same price going back to the beginning of 2023, end of 2022 but with 17-22,000 miles. Our Spotlight car, with more than double the miles, failed to sell at a final bid of $621,000. Light, but definitely closer than the Buy Now price of $1,150,000 in Deal Tank.
