1994 911 Speedster
Sometimes, rarity doesn't mean a premium
Some say that Porsche’s 964 Speedster combined the standard Carrera 2 and their lightweight racer, the Carrera RS. But it leaned much closer to the Carrera 2, with a similar engine and suspension, than the RS, from which it received some interior bits. Initially, Porsche planned to build 3,000 units, but in the end, it produced just 936, with the final 20 being Turbo-bodied versions built by Porsche Exclusive.
This 1994 911 Speedster is finished in Grand Prix White over Black and Grey leather and shows an impressive 67,838 miles on the odometer. It appears to be in fairly good condition inside and out from the limited photos provided in the gallery, but what really stands out is the Tiptronic transmission. With roughly 18 Tips produced worldwide and only 9 brought to the US, this Speedster is quite rare.
With such rarity, finding another Tiptronic comp was quite hard. In fact, I couldn’t find a single one offered at auction in the US in the last five years. And because this Speedster has such high miles, manual comps were few and far between, with a Black 52,000-mile example selling for $142k earlier this month and a 76,000-mile example selling for $95,000 back in August 2020.
Only one bid was placed on our Spotlight car early on in the auction, but unfortunately, I have no idea what it is as ACC Auctions doesn’t show final bids. But I imagine it was fairly low, as starting bids usually are. They do, however, have a Buy Now price of $159,985, which IMO is a bit of a stretch when looking at 5-speed comps. Sometimes, rarity doesn’t bring a premium.
