1996 911 Carrera RS
A solid deal for a special homologation RS
True homologation models were always forbidden fruit for us here in the US, and the 993 Carrera RS was no exception. Built to homologate the 993 RSR 3.8 for use in BPR GT3 and GT4 racing, the RS was a lightweight driver’s car sporting 300 naturally aspirated horsepower and a seam-welded body for stiffness. Often regarded as one of the greatest driver’s cars made, a friend of SML is currently downsizing their collection, but the 993 Carrera RS is staying. That says a lot about this car, considering the dream 911s this individual has let go of recently. It has certainly made me take notice.
This 1996 911 Carrera RS is finished in Polar Silver over Black with Gray Leather and shows just 18,000 km (11k miles) on the odometer. Originally a Japanese market example, the car was imported into the US in 2018 under Show or Display laws. Out of the box, the RS features 18” Speedline wheels, Bilstein dampers, rear anti-roll bars, and a seam-welded body. Optional equipment on this example includes a Clubsport rear wing, A/C, and fixed-back bucket seats.
As you can imagine, this car is in very good condition, with only 11,000 miles on the clock. The gallery features many photos (although many are at odd angles. Artsy?), including paint meter readings and every nook and cranny of the interior, engine bay, and undercarriage.
Mechanically, the car is all there with a binder of service records, including a most recent outing to Canepa of Scotts Valley, California, for over $30k in work. The sale includes a full set of books, a tire pump, and tools, although I don’t see pictures of keys. But I’m sure there is at least one.
Being RoW cars, most Carrera RS brought to online auctions are on overseas platforms, with cars here in the US being more prevalent at legacy, in-person sales. Over the last twelve months, average prices have been in the $337k range, with a high sale of $555,000 for the example offered at The White Collection. Our Spotlight car sold at a final bid of $394,000, about $20k under a recent comp, making this one well-bought.
