1996 993 Carrera RS Tribute
Let's break down the hierarchy of modified 993s
At first glance, the market for modified 993s appears to be all over the map, with cars selling from $70,000 all the way to $1.5m, with everything in between. But when you break it down, it shows some form of hierarchy regarding custom-built 993s.
All the way at the top, you have your Gunther Werks cars. Highly modified, “Reimagined,” if you will, with Carbon Fiber bodies and built engines. Next, you have what I call the “80s Tuner” cars. Here, we find Turbo 993s modified by the likes of RUF (not RUF VINs) and Gemballa. These cars tend to hover in the $400-500,000 range. Following the 80s Tuners, we see modified Turbos selling in the $250-350,000 range. These include a host of GT2 EVO-style examples and some nicely built, less wingy cars. And then, from about $100k up to $200k, we see our normally aspirated custom cars.
Today’s Spotlight car, this 1996 993 Carrera RS Tribute, falls in the lower range of modified 993s. On the outside, it features an FVD Motorsports carbon/Kevlar hood and decklid, a DRS Development carbon/Kevlar roof panel, genuine European-spec front and rear bumpers, a genuine Turbo S front spoiler, and air scoops, genuine Carrera RS side skirts, a replica RS Clubsport-style rear wing, clear turn signal lenses, and upgraded Bergvill F/X LED headlights. All this is wrapped in Mint Green vinyl over Midnight Blue Metallic paint.
Not to be outdone, the Black interior has been modified with Sparco QRT-C carbon fiber bucket seats, RS-style door panels, a Titan Motorsports roll bar, Rennline lower dash and radio delete, Rennline track mats and floorboards, Rothsport Racing shifter, genuine window lifter rails, and an original Carrera RS steering wheel.
Power comes from a Rodger Hawley-built 3.8-liter flat-six with Mahle pistons and cylinders, Carrillo rods, rebuilt distributors, a reconditioned ECU, RS motor mounts, and a new Sachs flywheel. Other modifications include KW V3 coilovers, Rennline camber plates and rear mounts, genuine RS sway bars, RS-spec suspension bushings, solid rear subframe bushings, a Rennline carbon fiber heater blower bypass, FD Motorsports stainless-steel braided brake lines, FD Motorsports Fister III mufflers, an Antigravity lithium battery, and a Rennline gusset kit for the reinforced engine carrier.
As you can guess, this build cost a pretty penny. Easily over $200k in work without including the cost of a car to start with. As we know, you rarely get what you put into custom modifications, but the final bid of $126,000 was a little light. A car of this caliber should be closer to the top of the Custom N/A price range, around $200k. It is currently offered in PCARMARKET’s Deal Tank for $175,000, which, in my opinion, is worth every penny. The only thing I’d do is ditch the white wheels and add a set of Speedlines.
