Was this modified Turbo a flip, or flop?

Making its debut at the 1999 Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche’s 996 Turbo had big shoes to fill, replacing the previous generation 911 Turbo, the last-of-the-air-cooled 993 Turbo. And fill those shoes it did as it came to market with a turbocharged flat-six engine derived from the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 race car. With 414 horsepower and 415 lb/ft of torque, the 996 Turbo was a worthy replacement.

But while the 996 Turbo is a much better car on paper than the 993, the markets couldn’t be more different. The current average price of a 993 Turbo is roughly the same as the highest price achieved for a 996 Turbo Coupe in the last five years at $182,047. Plus, there are about double the amount of 996 Turbos vs. 993 Turbos on the market at any given time.

The price of 996 Turbos has gone up, though. From an average of about $45k in 2019 to an average of $61k today, these cars have continued to perform despite the overabundance of examples on the market.

This 2002 911 Turbo, finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over Metropol Blue leather, first sold on Bring a Trailer in November 2020 for $45,750 with 57,000 miles on the odometer. Back then, it was lightly modified, but the new owner took care of that over the last few years, adding Porsche Genuine 996 GT3 bucket seats, a roll bar, Schroth Racing harnesses, a Numeric Racing shifter, and a Pioneer touchscreen head unit with back-up camera.

Underneath, the car rides on 18” Apex Forged wheels and is equipped with Elephant Racing GT3-R lower control arms, Elephant Racing rear upper mounts, and an Ohlins Road & Track suspension. Out back, the engine has an aftermarket ECU tune, modified airbox, and has had the coolant pipes pinned along with a replacement clutch slave cylinder and clutch.

With all of this work and an additional 4,000 miles, our Spotlight car sold at a high bid of $63,500. At that price, it’s about average for the mileage. But once you factor in the tasteful mods and recent service work performed on this car, we start talking about how well the buyer did here.
