Why is the market for base 991 Carreras going bananas?

Launched in December 2011, it didn’t take long for Porsche’s 991 to start racking up awards like “2012 World Performance Car,” as the latest 911 was the perfect balance between daily driver and engaging sports car. Although larger than the 997 generation 911 it replaced, the 991 was lighter, faster, and had better handling thanks to the larger wheelbase.

You might ask yourself why we are featuring a run-of-the-mill 991 Carrera. It’s not Paint to Sample, a 50th Anniversary car, or a Club Coupe. By all accounts, today’s Spotlight car, this 2015 911 Carrera Coupe 7-speed, is just a base Carrera, nicely optioned with Carrera S wheels, Sport Chrono, Sport Seats, Premium Package, and Bose, and is finished in Sapphire Blue Metallic over Black leather. It has some mileage at 34k and a minor accident on the CarFax, with pictures of the damaged bumper from a parking incident. But all in all, a nice, well-kept example.

What’s interesting about this 991, and others like it, is the market. While most normal 911s have been softening since the summer of 2021, 991 Carreras are still heading up, as not a single example has sold below $69,500 this year. It hasn’t mattered if the car had 25,000 or 55,000 miles; prices have remained strong, as this example sold for $70,444.

Why is that? Well, this might be a simple case of supply and demand. Over the last twelve months, only seven manual 991 Carrera Coupes have crossed the auction block, with five finding homes. When it comes to standard 911s, that isn’t a lot—well done for both parties here on a very nice modern 911.
