2015 918 Spyder Weissach

A new world record for Porsche's entry into the Holy Trinity

Hybrid hypercars were the name of the game in the early 2010s, with Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren all producing plug-in electric hybrids to showcase their most advanced technologies.

Porsche’s entry into the ‘Holy Trinity’ was the 918 Spyder. First shown as a concept car in 2010, the production version broke cover at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, with deliveries starting for the 2014 model year. The 918 is built on a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque powered by a naturally aspirated V8 with two electric motors, one driving the rear wheels and one the front. Total horsepower was rated at 875, which was good for a 0-60mph time of 2.2 seconds and a quarter mile time of 9.8 seconds in independent testing.

The market for 918 Spyders has remained fairly flat over the last five years, with an average price of $1.6m. In 2021 we saw a few low sales, just over $1m, but most have been in the $1.5m range predicated by spec and mileage. The highest price paid for a Spyder was $2,025,000 in June 2022 for a 904-mile example equipped with the Weissach package.

Our Spotlight car decimated that top sale as it hammered down at a final bid of $3,575,000. Why? Well, for one, the mileage. With only twelve miles on the odometer, it’s easily the lowest mileage example on Earth. And then there is the spec. Only a handful of Porsche’s best customers were given the opportunity to truly build their dream-spec Spyders, and the consignor took full advantage by opting for Paint to Sample Grand Prix White with color-matched magnesium wheels and an interior trimmed in leather-to-sample Yachting Blue with Bianco Leda piping.

Also accompanying this car are a few items you won’t find with many other Spyders: Yachting Blue leather luggage, a matching model car, Porsche 918 Spyder Circle race suit, helmet, and driving shoes, as well as a Porsche Design 918 Spyder Circle Chronotimer, all from the factory.

So was all of that worth an additional $1.5m dollars? For that, you could have a whole other Spyder. At least two bidders thought so.
