2024 718 Cayman S

The 718 market has fallen off a cliff

Wow, has the 718 Cayman really been around for eight years!? Launched in April 2016 at the Beijing Motor Show, the 718 Cayman replaced the outgoing 981-generation Cayman with a name harking back to the Porsche race car that won the 1959 & 1960 Targa Florio. The new naming convention is interesting, but the big surprise was that Porsche ditched the flat-6 in favor of a new flat-4 Turbocharged engine with a 2.0 for the base car, and a 345 bhp 2.5 for the S.

This 2024 718 Cayman is of the S variety and comes nicely equipped with Porsche’s PDK transmission, 20” Carrera S wheels, Sport Chrono Package, PASM, Premium Package and more for an original MSRP of $110,240. The car shows just 1,400 miles on the odometer and looks to be in as-new condition, as it should, because it basically is just broken in.

Interestingly, because this model has been around for such a long time, it’s a bit difficult to get a good look at the market as you’re comparing brand new cars, to a car that is eight model years old. Overall, the 718 Cayman market appears to be falling off a cliff as the average price line is almost straight down since the beginning of the year. Makes sense, since new cars are now available at Porsche Centers on the showroom floor. Gone are the days of a wait for a 718.

What also makes this car hard to pin down is that this is the fist 2024 model year example we’ve seen at auction, with the next newest cars being a pair of 2022s that failed to sell earlier this year. Our Spotlight car joins those no-sales at a final bid of $81,777. It might be hard to stomach a ~$30,000 loss after three months of ownership and only 1,400 miles, but the market has moved on. Yes, I know these are listed at Porsche Centers in the $90’s, but this example isn’t certified and those cars aren’t selling for asking prices. Should have sold as it’s not going to get much better with a re-run.
